MIRI: Deputy Minister of Women, Family, Welfare, Community Wellbeing and Childhood Development Datuk Rosey Yunus has praised the upcoming development of the Beraya Resort Township under a comprehensive Master Plan.

Describing the announcement by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as a welcomed move, Rosey, who is also the Bekenu assemblywoman, expressed joy over the development, which borders her constituency.

“I am truly delighted by the Premier’s announcement on the Beraya Resort Township. Although it falls under the Lambir constituency, it is located very close to the Bekenu border,” she said during her open house event at her residence in Taman Bumiko, here today (Apr 6).

She expressed confidence that the initiative would bring positive spillover effects to surrounding areas, including those beyond political boundaries.

“I believe development will flow across constituency borders. In fact, if we look at the administrative boundaries, Beraya is within the Subis district. This is indeed the kind of news we have been waiting for, especially since Miri is known as a resort city. The development happening outside Miri will complement the city and benefit neighbouring areas like ours.”

Rosey also noted that while areas like the Niah Cave hold potential, development there is limited due to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Since it’s a world heritage site, we cannot interfere with the environment there. It must be preserved in its current natural state.”

Commenting further, she said the masterplan’s potential to support water sports development, particularly sailing, was another major boost.

“We fully welcome this, because we’re confident that the development will include water sports facilities. In fact, we previously applied for a training centre for water sports, including sailing. For the 2024 Sukma Games, we managed to bring home a gold medal — a first for us. So this shows that the Premier has listened to our request for a dedicated sailing training centre,” she added.
