BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has postponed his official visit to Malaysia following the death of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
Anutin, also Interior Minister, said he had planned to travel on Saturday for the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur and a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but chose to delay the trip due to national mourning.
“Actually, I was supposed to travel to Malaysia today, but I requested to postpone the trip,” he told reporters after chairing a special Cabinet meeting at Government House on Saturday.
Anutin added that a signing ceremony for a peace framework between Thailand and Cambodia will now take place Sunday morning, witnessed by Anwar and US President Donald Trump. He said he will return to Thailand in time for the royal funeral.
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit passed away at 93 on Friday evening, the Bureau of the Royal Household announced. King Maha Vajiralongkorn has instructed a royal funeral with full honours and declared a one-year mourning period for the Royal Family and Royal Court officials.–BERNAMA
