KUCHING: A Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2024 project to upgrade drainage infrastructure and access roads in Kampung Stutong has officially commenced following the handover of a Letter of Award to the appointed contractor.

Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, witnessed the handover to Pine Contract and Supplies during a site visit today (Jan 22), together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

The project, ‘Menaiktaraf dan Membina Sistem Perparitan dan Jalan-Jalan Akses Kampung Stutong’, has been approved with an allocation of RM300,000 and aims to address long-standing issues of poor drainage, localised flooding, and inadequate access roads that have affected residents’ daily mobility and safety, especially during heavy rain.

Yap said the project reflected a people-centric approach to infrastructure delivery, informed by resident feedback.

“This is a people-centric infrastructure upgrade, driven by what residents have been raising at the grassroots level for some time,” he added.

“This RTP 2024 project is the result of continuous engagement with residents of Kampung Stutong. Proper drainage and safe access roads are basic but critical needs.

“Poor drainage has caused localised flooding in the area, and it affects not only comfort but also safety whenever heavy rain hits.”

Yap said access roads were essential for daily movement and emergency access, especially during adverse weather conditions.

“Access roads may seem basic, but they are critical for daily movement, emergency access and the overall well-being of the community,” he reiterated.

He said the upgrading works would not only improve living conditions but also reduce flood risks and strengthen overall safety for villagers.

“By upgrading these facilities, we are not only improving living conditions but also reducing flood risks and enhancing overall safety for the community,” he added.

Yap also stressed the importance of coordination between the implementing agency, contractor and local stakeholders to ensure the project is completed according to schedule and technical specifications.

“Close coordination between DID, the contractor and local stakeholders is essential to ensure smooth implementation and timely completion,” he said.

“This project must be carried out according to specifications, with quality workmanship as the top priority.”

He reminded all parties involved to minimise disruption to residents throughout the construction period, noting that his office would closely monitor progress.

“I also urge all parties to minimise inconvenience to residents throughout the construction period, he added.

“My office will monitor progress closely to ensure the project delivers real benefits to the people.”

Residents present welcomed the project and expressed appreciation for the attention given to long-standing infrastructure concerns in Kampung Stutong.

The drainage and access road upgrading works are expected to improve water flow management and internal connectivity within the village, thereby contributing to a safer, more resilient living environment for the local community.

“The improvements are expected to strengthen water flow management and enhance connectivity within the village.

“This will contribute towards a safer, more comfortable and resilient living environment for Kampung Stutong,” Yap added.
