KUCHING: A long-standing drainage and flash flood problem at Jalan Kuching Ranger Depot here has been resolved following the completion of a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) upgrade project.
The RM250,000 project was officially marked completed during a site visit by Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, at the location fronting Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
“This drainage upgrading project is a practical and necessary intervention to improve water flow and significantly reduce flood risks for road users and nearby communities,” he said.
Yap said the project addressed recurring water overflow issues that previously disrupted traffic movements and affected surrounding premises during periods of heavy rainfall.
He added that proper drainage infrastructure played a critical role in ensuring public safety, particularly in urban areas experiencing increasing rainfall intensity and higher traffic volume.
“This project reflects our commitment to resolving real issues faced by the people through targeted and effective infrastructure improvements,” he said during the visit.
The project involved upgrading existing drainage structures to enhance capacity and improve overall water flow efficiency along the affected stretch of road.
Yap expressed appreciation to the Public Works Department (PWD), the appointed contractor and all agencies involved for completing the project according to approved specifications.
“I would like to thank the PWD and all parties for their professionalism and dedication in delivering this project within the approved scope and technical requirements,” he said.
He noted that infrastructure projects under the RTP were prioritised based on direct feedback from residents and their impact on daily activities and safety.
“Our focus is always on projects that bring immediate, tangible benefits to the people, especially those affecting mobility, safety and quality of life,” he added.
Yap reaffirmed his commitment to closely monitor all RTP projects in Kota Sentosa to ensure timely delivery and long-term effectiveness.
“We will continue working hand in hand with implementing agencies to ensure every allocated project truly serves the community,” he said.
The completed drainage upgrade is expected to provide lasting relief from flash floods while improving road safety and convenience for motorists and pedestrians in the area.
