SAMARAHAN: Sepak takraw is not merely a sport but a symbol of cultural identity, unity and tradition, says Datuk Rubiah Wang, who lauded efforts to develop the game among youth.

The Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development commended the Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) for preserving the heritage of the sport while cultivating new talent.

“More importantly, sepak takraw serves as a channel for developing physical, mental and character strength.

“I truly admire how PSS is investing in youth and creating pathways for future champions to emerge from Sarawak,” she said in her speech at the welcoming dinner held in conjunction with the 2025 Sarawak Cup Sepak Takraw Championship on Friday night.

She also lauded the association for organising the Sarawak Cup 2025, describing it as a timely initiative to revitalise the sport and ensure its relevance among the younger generation.

This year’s tournament attracted ten divisions, and notably included an Under-20 boys’ category – a move Rubiah applauded as a meaningful step in youth engagement.

“It proves that our young people are still eager to learn and can be shaped into disciplined, capable athletes when given the right guidance and training,” she said.

However, she also raised concern over recent data from the Ministry of Health’s 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey, which showed that nearly 27 per cent of Malaysian adolescents aged 13 to 17 displayed signs of depression.

“One of the main causes identified is the lack of face-to-face social interaction and limited physical activity.

“This highlights the important role of sport not just in building strong bodies, but in supporting mental health and social well-being,” Rubiah noted.

She expressed confidence that Sarawak’s young athletes are not only physically fit and competitive, but also mentally resilient.

“These are the faces of hope, young Sarawakians who can bring pride to our state and make their mark on the international stage,” she added.

Among those present at the event were Samarahan Division Deputy Resident Rais Ahmat, Samarahan District Officer Ahmad Abdul Razak, Asajaya District Officer Jerry Zannuddin, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council Secretary Gustian Durani.

PSS President Datuk Ismail Abang Saufi, Samarahan Division Sepak Takraw Association President Mohammad Nizam Wang, and Perlis Sepak Takraw Association President Syed Azmir Syed Ahmad, were also seen at the event.
