KUCHING: With improved road connectivity and better access via the Pan Borneo Highway, Sarikei is preparing to host its first-ever half marathon, the Sarikei Tuanku Haji Bujang Bridge Half Marathon 2025.

The event, named after the newly inaugurated Tun Dato’ Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bridge over Batang Rajang, is part of a growing effort to position Sarikei as a vibrant hub for sports tourism and community events.

Kuala Rajang assemblyman Datuk Len Talif Salleh confirmed that the event will offer five categories, namely a 21km and 10km events for both open and veteran runners, as well as a 5km Fun Run open to participants aged 12 and above.

“That is why, through this early announcement, we are calling for widespread participation — not just from the people of Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, or Betong, but from all Sarawakians, Malaysians, and anyone interested in being part of this historic event,”he said in a press conference on Monday (July 7) at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex.

The bridge, officially named and opened by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on May 17, has significantly reduced travel time in the region.

Travel between Tanjung Manis and Sarikei has been cut from two and a half hours to just 30 minutes. This improved connectivity is expected to ease travel for participants from across Borneo.

“We hope this event draws at least 1,000 participants. We’ve seen encouraging interest from previous fun runs in Sarikei, with runners coming from Miri, Kapit, Sabah, and even Kalimantan Barat.

“With the bridge and road upgrades, it’s now possible to make a day trip from Kuching and return the same day,” he added.

The half marathon will begin early in the morning at 4 am to allow runners to take in the cool morning air and scenic views of Batang Rajang.

Registration is now open, with Early Bird rates running from July 8 to 20, followed by Regular registration from July 21 to August 10.

Fees by category:

21KM: RM70 (Early Bird), RM90 (Regular)

10KM: RM50 (Early Bird), RM70 (Regular)

5KM Fun Run: RM40 (Early Bird), RM50 (Regular)
