SARAWAK is stepping up efforts to turn its rural areas into vibrant economic hubs, focusing on inclusive growth, fair wealth distribution and active community participation.

Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said the state’s development strategy views rural residents as more than workers.

“Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s focus on rooting this development in the rural base positions local communities, not merely as employees but as primary stakeholders,” he said when debating on the Sarawak Budget 2026 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Friday (Nov 28).

He urged rural representatives to play an active role in planning and implementing development initiatives.

“As ADUNs from rural areas, we are expected to respond positively by strategising plans and integrating measured implementation into our local agenda.”

Mawan also noted the importance of expanded rural equity participation, suggesting it be promoted through seminars and community talks organised by NGOs in collaboration with the government to raise awareness and create opportunities for economic growth.

He pointed out the state’s goal to eliminate rural classifications by 2030, adding, “By 2030, no section of the state will be classified as rural, and deliberate steps will be taken to support the transformation of these areas.”

Stressing that equity and partnerships are key to rural economic growth, he said there is renewed hope and clarity in achieving the goals.

“The people of Pakan join me in welcoming with pride the Premier’s assurance that the government will continue to accelerate rural development and intensify infrastructure projects to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas.”
