BELAGA: The Ministry of Digital Malaysia has been urged to expand efforts to provide rural communities with exposure to technology and knowledge on cybersecurity.

Deputy Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the rise in digital scams and the spread of false information, including deepfake content, posed challenges that could disrupt social harmony if left unaddressed.

“Technology is a tool, but we must be able to distinguish between what is true and false. Rural communities must not be left behind, and they need to be equipped with digital knowledge and awareness,” he said.

Speaking at the opening of Regatta Belaga recently, he called on the ministry to take a more aggressive and inclusive approach in expanding access to digital education and cyber literacy to remote areas.

He said the digital divide not only hindered rural economic development but also created opportunities for the exploitation of false information that could mislead the public.

At the event, Gerald, representing Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, handed over a van to the Darul Taqwa Mosque Management Committee Belaga.

He also appointed a consultant for the Belaga Sports Stadium development project and presented RM25,000 to the Belaga Regatta Committee.
