THE rising health risks faced by rural communities, especially in Baleh, demand immediate attention.
Nicholas Kudi Jantai (GPS-Baleh) recently said that there has been concern among residents in Baleh regarding diseases caused by soil bacteria, such as melioidosis, which originate from activities in the river.
“Kapit Hospital has recorded the highest number of cases of soil bacteria and leptospirosis so far.
“Residents in my area still rely heavily on rivers for daily use, including cooking, bathing, and other activities. In fact, the gravity-fed water supply is channelled directly from rivers near the longhouses.
“However, the quality of river water is no longer what it once was,” he said during his debate in support of the Supply Bill 2025 yesterday (Nov 14).
Nicholas added that residents used to be able to take water directly from the source for drinking and cooking without worrying about the presence of soil bacteria and other harmful bacteria in the river water.
“Therefore, I urge the government to take this matter seriously and recommend that the Health Department conduct awareness and prevention programmes regarding diseases originating from soil and water.”
