MUKAH: The rural school electricity grid connection project in Sarawak has enhanced access to quality education while supporting the implementation of digital learning in remote areas.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah said the project is a strategic investment by the Sarawak government to ensure rural students enjoyed educational facilities comparable to those in urban areas.

“This project is not merely an infrastructure achievement, but an important investment in the future of Sarawak’s children,” he said at the handover ceremony for the Rural Schools Electricity Grid Connection Project at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Duan here Tuesday (Feb 3).

The project, which began in 2018 under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), involved a total cost of RM38.48 million out of an approved ceiling of RM50 million and benefited 122 rural schools across Sarawak.

Sagah said the project was implemented through five work packages starting in 2020 and was fully completed in 2025.

He said stable electricity supply was a key foundation in supporting technology-based learning, strengthening STEM education and creating a more conducive learning environment for students.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli said 121 schools had been connected to the public electricity grid, providing a more stable 24-hour power supply and reducing operating costs compared to diesel generators.

He expressed appreciation to Sarawak Energy as the main implementing agency, particularly the project team led by Rural Electrification general manager Nazry Abdul Latip, for their commitment and efficiency in delivering the project.
