KUCHING: SMK Long Bedian in Telang Usan made history by achieving a 100 percent pass rate in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), a first since its establishment over a decade ago.

The success of all 43 candidates, including 24 from the Penan community, was highlighted during a courtesy visit by Telang Usan community leaders to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex.

Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau, who led the delegation, credited the state government’s special funding for enabling extra classes and academic support programs.

He also shared an inspiring story of a student who returned to school after dropping out for nine years, joined Form 5 in March 2024, and managed to pass the SPM at the end of last year.

“This story proves that children from the interior are actually intelligent and highly capable when given the opportunity and support,” he said when met by reporters.

During the meeting, the group also submitted infrastructure development proposals, including requests for the upgrading of old logging roads, as well as an official invitation to the Premier to conduct a working visit to the Baram area.

“Development is a continuous process. As long as there are needs, we must continue to voice them for the well-being of people in the interior,” he added.
