KUCHING: The Sarawak National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) continues to cement its role as a leading youth platform in the state, having registered 55,992 members to date, with its reach expected to grow significantly in the coming year.

SABERKAS President, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the organisation now boasts 494 active units and 82 branches across Sarawak.

“The number of branches will keep increasing over the next year as more young people come on board. This shows SABERKAS remains relevant and continues to attract new members,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after chairing the SABERKAS Exco Annual Meeting here at UCSI Hotel today.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, highlighted that the organisation held a total of 244 programmes between November 2024 and June 2025 alone, ranging from social and welfare initiatives to sports, entrepreneurship, skills training and education.

“At this rate, I won’t be surprised if the number of programmes reaches 500 by the end of the year.

“Our members are very active, and many of these initiatives are grassroots-driven,” he said, noting that the activities are often held in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and other non-governmental organisations.

Abdul Karim also shared that SABERKAS’ financial standing remains strong, with surplus funds placed in fixed deposits, allowing for continued support of large-scale events and outreach.

“Among the flagship programmes planned for the second half of 2025 is the President’s Futsal Cup, slated for November, which will involve teams from all 82 branches.

“This will be one of the biggest futsal tournaments we’ve hosted, and it’s exclusive to SABERKAS members.

“The prize pool will be attractive, and we expect it to draw widespread participation from across Sarawak,” he said.

Another highlight is the Youth Glamping programme, scheduled to take place in August at Layar, Betong.

“These programmes are tailored to the interests of our youth. Whether through sports or outdoor activities, the goal is to foster unity and camaraderie among young Sarawakians,” he added.

Abdul Karim expressed confidence that with a growing membership and robust calendar of events, SABERKAS would continue to play a key role in youth empowerment and leadership development throughout the state.
