ASAJAYA: A mangrove eco park project worth an estimated RM15 million is being developed outside Kampung Semera, covering a large part of the mangrove wetland area at the Semera estuary.
Speaking at the closing of the Kampung Angkat MADANI 2025 programme in Kampung Semera, Sadong Jaya assemblyman, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, said the village coastline had been steadily expanding due to natural land accretion, stretching from Jemukan to Sepayu River.
“The phenomenon had added several hundred acres of new land over the years, which local farmers have been able to cultivate,” he said.
Aidel said more than 80 acres of the newly formed land had recently been planted with hybrid coconut in Kampung Semera.
He said the soil along the coastal area, which is regularly inundated by seawater during high tide, contains natural salt minerals that have proven favourable for coconut cultivation, with smallholders in the area already producing healthy yields.
He called on UNIMAS to extend further research and technical agricultural assistance for coconut cultivation in Kampung Semera, building on the smallholder efforts already under way.
