KUCHING: Residents and shoppers at Emart Batu Kawa witnessed firsthand the importance of fire safety during the ‘Community Caring Programme: Safe Homes 2026’ organised by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for the Kuching Zone today (Feb 6).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was the guest of honour, commended Bomba for its tireless efforts in protecting lives and property across Sarawak.

“The safety of homes cannot be taken lightly. A small negligence at home can cause not only loss of property, but it can also endanger lives,” he said, stressing that early prevention and community awareness are vital in reducing fire risks.

He highlighted the added dangers during festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, when cooking activities, electrical appliances and decorations increase the likelihood of fire incidents.

Dr Sim also praised Bomba’s broad range of duties, from firefighting and rescue operations to public education, and commended the department for inspiring children through school visits and awareness programmes.

He said such engagement ensures communities are better prepared and safety-conscious, creating a culture of responsibility that begins at home.

The programme also recognised acts of bravery and contributions to fire safety.

Six civilians were awarded HERO FIRE certificates for their quick response in extinguishing a shop house fire in Matang on January 12, 2026.

Three contributors received Golden Heart certificates, while three premises that complied with fire safety standards under the Fire Hazard Elimination programme (MBK) were given Appreciation Letters.

Bomba’s collaboration with Emart was recognised with Collaboration Certificates, and six civilians were named Fire Hydrant Friends for their active participation in community safety initiatives.
