KUCHING: Records tumbled on Day 1 of the 52nd Sarawak Age Group (SAG) Swimming Championships as Anson Chiu Wei Kiet and Shanise Jauwa Joseline Adong broke long-time meet records from 2004 and 2018.
Bintulu’s Anson set a new meet record in the boys’ 14-15 200m breaststroke final with a time of 2:25.74, surpassing the previous record of 2:31.50 set by Tay Xue Jun in 2004.
Kuching’s Shanise followed by smashing the girls’ 50m backstroke record, clocking 31.81 seconds to break Leong Wan Mei’s 2018 mark of 32.35 seconds.
Ethan Tan Kheng Hong Tan, who finished second in the boys’ 14-15 200m breaststroke, also surpassed the previous meet record, posting a time of 2:26.93.
In the team standings, Kuching Amateur Swimming Association 2010 (KASA2010) led with 815 points, followed by Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) with 515 points.
Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (KOTAS) held third place with 294 points, while Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (SASA) and Bintulu Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) were fourth and fifth with 161 and 145 points respectively.
The 52nd SAG Swimming Championships, which starts today (Jan. 2) will conclude on Sunday (Jan. 4), serve as a key selection meet for the 2026 Malaysia Invitational Age Group (MIAG) and the Schools Sports Council of Malaysia (MSSM) championships, with 262 swimmers competing across six age categories, ranging from nine years old and below to 21 years old.
