SAINS, Hewlett Packard ink deal to boost state’s sovereign AI capabilities

BARCELONA, Spain: Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) has signed a strategic collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to strengthen sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and private cloud infrastructure in Sarawak.

The agreement, signed on March 2, sets out a framework to develop a secure and sovereign private cloud foundation, aimed at accelerating digital service delivery while ensuring data residency and government control.

SAINS Chief Executive Officer, Busiai Seman, said the collaboration demonstrates SAINS’ commitment to building a secure and sovereign digital ecosystem for the state.

“By working with HPE, we aim to establish a trusted AI and cloud foundation that safeguards our data, enhances public service delivery and supports long-term digital growth,” he added.

Under the agreement, HPE will support the modernisation of the Sarawak government’s private cloud environment by providing scalable on-demand infrastructure and flexible consumption-based services.

The initiative will also introduce secure AI systems supported by high-performance computing, reliable storage solutions, advanced networking security and enterprise-grade AI operations platforms to enable efficient AI development and management.

Meanwhile, HPE Malaysia’s Managing Director, Toh Kean Cheah, said the company was pleased to collaborate with SAINS in advancing sovereign AI capabilities and strengthening private cloud infrastructure in Sarawak.

“By bringing our expertise in secure enterprise-grade infrastructure, we aim to support SAINS in building a scalable, resilient and future-ready digital foundation that enables innovation while safeguarding data sovereignty,” he added.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged between SAINS Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Chien, and HPE General Manager for Client Aales Asia Pacific and Managing Director for Indonesia, Jason Ong, during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 held here.

The exchange was witnessed by Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunication), Datuk Liwan Lagang, representing Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
