KUCHING: Measures to prevent large trees from becoming hazards during severe weather are being considered in the Samariang constituency following yesterday’s (Aug 15) heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Hajah Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said the measure was necessary to ensure the safety of road users remained a priority.
On Saturday’s storm, she said the unusually heavy rain and strong winds had caused many trees to topple.
She added that the situation was also being monitored by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), which had conducted an inspection of the affected areas on Saturday.
“Insya-Allah, we will ensure that the safety of road users remains a priority. If necessary, we will trim the trees and may carry out the work,” she told reporters after officiating the ‘Seminar Wanita ‘Keluarga Idaman Wanita: Bahagia Hingga ke Syurga’ at Auditorium Wisma SABATI event here today.
On Saturday, heavy rain and thunderstorms that hit the city disrupted several routes following fallen trees and cables.
Among the affected locations was Jalan Astana towards the Kuching Court Complex, where a tree reportedly fell and blocked the road.
Additionally, a cable pole was also reported to have fallen along the route from Kipali Roundabout towards Gita, affecting traffic flow in the area.
Meanwhile, Sharifah Hasidah also said several houses in the Samariang constituency were affected by the storm.
“Indeed, several houses were affected but we are still identifying their condition,” she said.
