KUCHING: Sarawakian rugby forward, Samuel Rentap, is back on home soil to lead a training session at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field this coming Tuesday (Dec 23).
Currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Samuel endured a season marked by setbacks and comebacks, beginning with a broken hand earlier this year that sidelined him for three months.
Rather than stepping away from the game, the enforced break opened a new chapter in his rugby journey as he took on a coaching role with the Cobra U17 Academy.
He later made a strong return to competitive action, featuring for Cobra in the KRS season and finishing runners-up, while also enjoying productive stints with Muamalat Bullets and KE Tigers RC.
After falling short against PDRM in consecutive seasons, exiting at the quarter-final stage in 2023 and the semi-finals in 2024 – Samuel was given the opportunity to join the police outfit this year.
He played his part as PDRM completed a historic Agong Cup three-peat, ending the year as national champions.
Back in Kuching, Samuel said he hopes to organise a rugby clinic for schoolboys in the city.
“I’m not teaching them how to play rugby, but to give them more insight into the game and help change their mindset if they want to go far in rugby,” he told Sarawak Tribune today (Dec 22).
He added that invitations have, for now, been extended to SMK St Joseph and SMK Lake, Bau, which is known for its Lakers rugby setup.
The session is expected to begin at 8.30am and is open to the public.
