KUCHING: Vietnam national team boss Kim Sang-sik will take charge of the ASEAN All-Stars for their upcoming fixture against Manchester United, confirmed the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) on Thursday.
The match, billed as the Maybank Challenge Cup, is set for 28 May at Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
It marks the first time a combined ASEAN squad will face the English club in a formal setting.
Sang Sik’s recent success at the helm of Vietnam – who lifted the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric ASEAN Cup without losing a match – reinforced his reputation as one of the region’s most capable tacticians.
His leadership has been praised for its clarity, discipline and long-term vision.
“It’s an honour to lead the best players from across ASEAN in a match of this magnitude.
“We are not just representing our nations – we are showing the world the pride, spirit and strength of our region,” said Sang-Sik following his appointment.
AFF President Major General Khiev Sameth welcomed the appointment, describing Kim as “a coach who embodies the region’s growing professionalism”.
“His impact goes beyond results. He inspires players, coaches and fans alike.
“This collaboration reflects a shared belief in Southeast Asian football’s potential.
“We look forward to welcoming Manchester United and showcasing the quality of our region,” said Khiev.
Full team selections and ticketing details are expected to follow in due course.
