SAR ends as body of foreign worker recovered from river

KUCHING: The body of a Myanmar national, who fell into Sarawak River while crossing a bridge to a container ship on Sunday (Dec 15), was found drowned today (Dec 16).

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that 49-year-old Win Kyaw Paik was discovered afloat by rescuers at 10.14 am, about 4km from the search and rescue (SAR) control post.

The body was retrieved from Kampung Sejingkat waters and taken to the SAR control post before being handed over to the police for transport to the hospital.

Following the discovery, the SAR operation was officially called off at 11.30 am.

The incident happened at 12.10 am when the victim, employed as a ship worker, fell into the river at Sejingkat Terminal, Jalan Bako.

A police report was lodged by his employer, prompting rescue agencies to initiate a search operation at the scene.
