MIRI: Sarawak continues to stand as the best example of racial unity and religious harmony in Malaysia, thanks to its rich diversity and inclusive governance, says Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

He said Sarawak’s uniqueness lies in its diversity of ethnicities and beliefs that are celebrated in the daily lives of its people without affecting social harmony.

“This is the uniqueness of Sarawak that we must preserve and continue for future generations.

“This harmonious freedom of religion has been strongly supported by our Sarawak leaders, including our current Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said.

He said this at the 37th Anniversary Dinner of the Iban Methodist Church, Miri held at a hotel here last night (July 5).

Ugak, who is also the Hulu Rajang MP, expressed his appreciation for the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), which he described as clear proof of the Sarawak government’s commitment to supporting non-Islamic religious institutions.

“In this regard, we should be grateful to the Sarawak government for establishing UNIFOR in 2017 under the Premier’s Office, which has greatly helped in repairing churches,” he stated.

Apart from that, he also encouraged the use of technology to empower communities and enhance the effectiveness of worship place management.

“For example, the use of church attendance kiosks and QR codes for donations.

“Technology should be used for good and to benefit the community, including the Christian community,” he added.

He also touched on current issues relating to JAKIM’s proposed guidelines regarding Muslim participation in non-Islamic religious celebrations, stating that any approach must be taken carefully to avoid disturbing the nation’s harmony and unity.

Meanwhile, Ugak announced an allocation of RM30,000 to the church in support of its active role in community development and social welfare.

More than 600 guests from various backgrounds attended the event, as a gesture of gratitude and a fundraising effort for the development and operations of the church, which has served the local community for 37 years.
