THE Sarawak government has allocated RM2.49 billion under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) and Alternative Funding to expand rural electricity coverage through 214 projects, benefitting 59,698 households.
According to the Minister of Utility And Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, 179 projects have already been completed while 35 projects are progressing at various stages of implementation.
Julaihi said the substantial investment reflected the state’s firm commitment to improving rural electrification.

“These projects demonstrate our seriousness in ensuring rural communities enjoy a reliable and accessible electricity supply, in line with Sarawak’s development goals,” he said during his winding-up speech at the DUN sitting.
Additionally, he said that although Sarawak was close to achieving full rural electricity coverage, certain areas still could not receive electricity due to on-ground constraints.
“There are locations where infrastructure works cannot proceed because we are waiting for roads to be completed before distribution lines can be built.
“Some projects are also awaiting the completion of new settlements while others are delayed due to unresolved wayleave issues.
“Wayleave matters must be settled before construction of distribution lines can be carried out,” he said.
Julaihi emphasised that his ministry would continue to work closely with other ministries, departments, agencies and local communities to address these challenges.
“We will ensure that the implementation of electricity infrastructure, especially in the rural areas, runs smoothly and benefits the people.
“Expanding rural utility infrastructure remains a priority for the state.
“Our goal is clear, and that is to ensure that rural Sarawakians enjoy the same level of development and access to essential services as those in urban areas,” he said.
