KUCHING: The Sarawak government has approved the construction of the Special Needs Community Centre (SNCC) at Pusat Pemulihan Samarahan, with an allocation of RM55.7 million.

Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah announced on Thursday (Feb 20) at the Autism Art Exhibition at the Spring Mall here that SNCC will be a comprehensive one-stop centre catering to various aspects of special needs care, including early diagnosis, intervention, rehabilitation, education, vocational training, job matching, talent development, and sports activities.

The facility will also include a sheltered workshop and income-generating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

“This is the first facility of its kind in Malaysia, where services will be provided from cradle to grave,” she said.

The initiative aims to provide lifelong support and services for individuals with special needs, from infancy to old age.

Beyond providing essential services, SNCC aims to address concerns regarding the long-term welfare of individuals with disabilities, particularly those without family support or heirs.

The centre will primarily function as a day-care facility offering intervention, rehabilitation, vocational training, and talent development programmes.

To promote independence and job security, SNCC will incorporate sheltered workshops and job matching services. It will also feature a residential care facility for individuals without heirs or guardians, ensuring they have a safe and supportive environment throughout their lives.

Fatimah also underscored the importance of employment for individuals with disabilities, noting that several graduates with special needs have already been employed in the Sarawak civil service.

“Employment is crucial not only for financial independence but also for self-esteem and dignity,” she stated.

The project is currently in the planning and design phase, with a consultant appointed to finalise the building plans. Once completed, the SNCC will also serve as a training and accommodation centre for para-athletes participating in competitions.

Construction is set to commence this year, with the tendering process already underway.
