Sarawak athletes grab 30 medals at taekwondo championship

SIBU: A total of 45 young athletes from the Sarawak Global Taekwondo Association (SGTA) have recorded a proud achievement when they successfully brought home 30 medals at the Fifth MTF National Championship 2025 held at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in Kajang, Selangor, recently.


Sarawak won six gold medals, seven silver medals, and 17 bronze medals, placing the state contingent in 10th position out of 25 associations participating from across the country.

SGTA president, Ahmad Zaini Fauzan said the Sarawak contingent this time was lined up with 45 participants consisting of 23 athletes from Sibu, 10 from Mukah, and another 12 from Kuching and Samarahan.

According to him, 90 per cent of the participants were new faces, aged between seven and 19, who participated in two main categories, namely ‘pattern’ and ‘sparring’.

“This is a proud achievement because the majority of the participants are new athletes and are able to compete well at the national level,” he told reporters here on Friday.

The main contribution came from Sibu participants who contributed five of the six gold medals for the Sarawak contingent, in addition to contributing to the silver and bronze medals.

SGTA participants consisted of students from various schools around Sibu, including SMK Rosli Dhoby, Kolej Vokasional Sibu, SMK Agama Sibu, SK Abang Ali and SK Agama Sibu.

In addition, there was active participation from clubs such as Taekwondo Sibu Jaya and First Kick Taekwondo.

Among the gold medal winners from here were Aydino Shaquilly Avandya Yun Yun Toh Chuong from SK Abang Ali (Sparring Category 7–8 years, weight 21kg and below), Nur Nadhira Nasuha Shamsudin from SMK Agama Sibu (Sparring 13–14 years, Micro Weight 40kg and below), Mohammad Hafiy Mohamad Yazid from SMK Rosli Dhoby (Sparring 15–17 years, weight 53.1kg–61kg), Claudya Avony Main from Kolej Vokasional Sibu (Sparring 18 years and above, Hyper Weight 64.1kg & above), and Spencer Gibson Igat Paran from SMK Rosli Dhoby (Pattern 15–17 years and above).

Meanwhile, another gold medal was won by a sparring athlete from outside Sibu, Alvin Aji Thomas.

For the silver medal, the winners from Sibu included Devanno Tristan Avshalom Donny from SK Abang Ali (Sparring 7–8 years, Light Weight), Nur Alieya Aliesya Abdullah from SK Agama Sibu (Sparring 15–17 years, Micro Weight 45kg and below), Lau Hui Ping from Kolej Vokasional Sibu (Sparring 18 years and above, Light Weight 50.1kg–57kg) and Nur Aisyah Aleesya Norarbi from SMK Rosli Dhoby (Sparring 13–14 years, Hyper Weight 52.1kg and above).

For the bronze category, the Sibu contingent managed to collect 14 medals through the sparring and pattern categories.

The bronze medal winners in the sparring category were Dayang Zalikha Abang Mohamad Yazid from SMK Agama Sibu, Damian Harith Aizryq Bob Azahary from SK Agama Sibu, Mohamad Zariff Adam Mohamad Zaidi from SMK Rosli Dhoby, Muhammad Akif Muqriz Muhammad Aizat from SK Agama Sibu, Damia Maisarah Mohamad Mahathir from SMK Rosli Dhoby, and Emylia Nataysa Abdullah Muhammad Haikal from Kolej Vokasional Sibu.

For the pattern category, bronze medals were also won by Aydino Shaquilly (SK Abang Ali), Devanno Tristan (SK Abang Ali), Dayang Zalikha (SMK Agama Sibu), Mohamad Zariff Adam (SMK Rosli Dhoby), Damia Maisarah (SMK Rosli Dhoby), Nur Alieya Aliesya (SK Agama Sibu), Casscius Bethelem Chin Lawrence from First Kick Taekwondo Club, and Nur Aisyah Aleesya (SMK Rosli Dhoby).

Meanwhile, Kuching also contributed one gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.

According to Zaini, this achievement not only reflects the great potential of young Sarawak athletes, but also proves the effectiveness of the continuous training carried out by SGTA coaches.
