SARAWAK athletes have made their mark at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, bringing home a total of five gold, eight silver, and 10 bronze medals.

Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah extended his heartfelt congratulations to the athletes for their outstanding achievements during his ministerial winding-up speech at the DUN sitting on today (May 23).

“Their exceptional performances in certain sports such as diving, athletics, golf, and swimming have brought immense pride to the people of Sarawak.”

In line with the vision of “Sports for All”, Abdul Karim highlighted the ministry’s continuous efforts to promote traditional sports (sukan rakyat) such as tarik tali, sepak raga bulatan, tating, balak lampung, gusti payu and more.

“The ministry is also actively supporting the establishment of new sports associations, including obstacle sports, functional fitness, pickleball, jombola, and woodball.

“It is anticipated that these emerging sports will gain global recognition in the future, contributing to Sarawak’s vision of becoming a sports powerhouse by 2030.”

Abdul Karim further highlighted the ministry’s collaboration with the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts to promote sports tourism such as DekaFit, Spartan Race, and the Functional Fitness Competition Sarawak Open this year.

“The events will attract international participants from neighbouring countries such as Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia.”
