KUCHING: Sarawak secured second place at the 22nd Malaysian Deaf Games (SOPMA) 2025, winning 20 medals.
As the host, the state contingent delivered an impressive performance by bagging nine gold, four silver and seven bronze medals, surpassing their initial target of eight golds.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah was proud of the athletes’ achievements, saying the results reflected Sarawak’s sporting strength and commitment.

“I am very proud of the Sarawak contingent, which not only proved to be warm and excellent hosts but also delivered outstanding performances in various sports and successfully exceeded the original target of eight gold medals.
“Congratulations to all the athletes for proving that Sarawakians can do it, Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!” she said.
She was speaking at the SOPMA XXII 2025 closing ceremony at a leading hotel here on Monday (Oct 6).
Sabah emerged as overall champions, dominating the medal tally with 38 medals — 17 gold, 13 silver and eight bronze — while Federal Territory placed third with 23 medals comprising seven gold, six silver and 10 bronze.
Fatimah also said SOPMA XXII in Sarawak was more than just a sporting event, describing it as a manifestation of the state government’s commitment to inclusivity, unity and the well-being of all communities.
“Through this support, we have shown that communication barriers are not obstacles to excellence.
“SOPMA serves as a platform to recognise the extraordinary abilities and talents of Deaf athletes, and it should stand as an example and inspiration to all Malaysians,” she added.
Meanwhile, the best male athlete award went to Azlan Kuste of Sabah, while the best female athlete was awarded to Sarawak’s own Sia Chew Ing.
