SARIKEI: Sarawak will begin exporting hydrogen to Singapore this year, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“This year, we will start exporting hydrogen to Singapore in the form of magnesium hydride, which is solid hydrogen that can be compressed and converted back into hydrogen upon arrival in Singapore,” he said in his address at the state-level National Day 2025 celebration held here today.
The event was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Also present were Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Abang Johari added that the shipment represents the first time one ASEAN country has exported hydrogen to another, strengthening Sarawak’s position as a pioneer in renewable energy development.
Abang Johari said Sarawak is targeting to generate 15 gigawatts of green energy by 2035, in line with its ambition to become the “battery of ASEAN” and attract greater investments into green industries.
“Our role in ASEAN is clear. I hope the initiative to create an ASEAN power grid will be discussed by regional leaders during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October,” he added.
The Premier also stressed that Sarawak’s leadership in the energy sector has been recognised at the international level, including in the recent joint statement between the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Sultan of Brunei at the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation.
To strengthen its green agenda, he said Sarawak has launched several key frameworks, including the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, the Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint 2030, and the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P).
“These initiatives will ensure a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability, as we work towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050,” Abang Johari said.
