KUCHING: Sarawak is strengthening its position as a regional leader in renewable energy through enhanced collaboration with Bergen, Norway, a city renowned for its sustainable urban development and clean energy initiatives.
During a working visit there, Sarawak’s delegation, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, explored opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy, sustainable urban planning, and investment.
A press statement said that the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Bergen mayor Marit Warncke, providing Sarawak’s delegation with a valuable opportunity to learn from Bergen’s successful integration of modern infrastructure while preserving its rich cultural and historical heritage.
The discussions highlighted shared strengths in key industries such as energy, forestry, fisheries, and agriculture, as both regions navigate the global transition toward sustainability.
“By fostering stronger ties with Bergen and Norway, Sarawak aims to accelerate its renewable energy transition while benefiting from Bergen’s expertise in sustainable urban planning and key economic sectors.
“Strengthening these partnerships will support Sarawak’s vision of becoming a regional leader in green energy and sustainable development,” the statement said.
It stated that Sarawak has emerged as Malaysia’s renewable energy powerhouse, with hydropower projects such as the Bakun and Murum dams contributing to 62 per cent of its energy mix.
The state is further expanding its sustainable energy portfolio, with initiatives in green hydrogen production, floating solar farms, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and microalgae cultivation.
Its Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) has attracted investments totaling RM102.3 billion as of 2021, bolstered by competitive power tariffs and investor-friendly policies.
As Malaysia assumes the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, the country is prioritising green energy and sustainable urbanisation, positioning Sarawak as a key player in advancing these regional goals.
“As Sarawak continues to modernise and expand its global economic presence, collaborations with forward-thinking cities like Bergen pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
“This visit marks a crucial step in enhancing diplomatic, economic, and environmental cooperation between Sarawak and Norway,” the statement added.
