SUNGAI Asap, Belaga, is now home to the world’s largest sape sculpture, a monumental work of art that not only celebrates Sarawak’s cultural heritage but also conveys deep messages of unity and love.

Standing 40 feet tall and weighing an impressive 3 tons, this striking sculpture is made entirely from recycled motorcycle parts, symbolising a blend of tradition and sustainability.

The sape, a traditional lute-like instrument from the indigenous Orang Ulu community, is known for its intricate wooden carvings and its role in cultural ceremonies and spiritual rituals.

Played with plucking and strumming techniques, it conveys stories, beliefs, and emotions through its melodic patterns.

Over time, the sape has also evolved, blending with contemporary genres such as pop and jazz, gaining global recognition.

The creation of this larger-than-life sculpture began in July 2023 and was completed in October 2024, taking approximately 18 months to bring to life.

The man behind the design is Mohammad Kasat, founder of Kasat Arca, an art studio based in Sadong Jaya.

He said the sculpture represents unity within Sarawak’s multicultural community and love for nature.

“It symbolises the harmony within our multicultural community and our deep affection for nature.

“Built with love and passion, the sculpture was designed to evoke a ‘living’ effect, representing the spirit of togetherness.

“It conveys a powerful message: we are one, bonded by love, in our diverse community and our shared connection to the natural world,” he said to Sarawak Tribune.

Kasat, along with his dedicated team—Syanizi, George, Sanusi, Iskandar, Hadi, Khairull, Manoi, Haidel, and Syanizan—worked tirelessly to complete the project.

The sculpture’s design, while paying homage to the traditional sape form, also incorporates a modern touch, using recycled materials like motorcycle parts to deliver an environmentally sustainable message.

Its dimensions are equally impressive: 9 feet wide at the body and 6 feet wide at the base, giving it a commanding presence.

Kasat said that the idea for the sculpture took shape after a chance meeting between him and Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon during the National Craft Day 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex.

Inspired by their discussion, the vision for the world’s largest sape began to take form, culminating in the awe-inspiring installation at the Apau Koyan Cultural Festival site, Sungai Asap.

During the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in November, Chukpai announced that the upcoming Apau Koyan Cultural Festival, scheduled for Dec 12 to 14, will aim to set two Elite World Records.

One of the highlights will be the official recognition of the largest sape sculpture, crafted entirely from recycled metal.

Chukpai asserted that the primary objective of this record-breaking attempt is to preserve the heritage of traditional music and culture of the Orang Ulu community.

By doing so, it seeks to position this cultural treasure as both a domestic and international tourist attraction.

Meanwhile, Kasat Arca, established in 2012 as Najib Welding Works, underwent a significant transformation in 2022 when it shifted focus to creating art sculptures from metal and recycled materials.

The studio has since garnered attention for its attention to detail and commitment to blending art with sustainability.

Their works have been featured at prestigious events, including the Rainforest World Music Festival, and have received recognition from institutions like the Sarawak Arts Council, Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra) Berhad, and Yayasan Borneo Taman Muda (YBTM) Sadong Jaya.

Kasat shared that his approach to creating sculptures stems from his deep passion and dedication.

“When I create something, I pour my whole heart and soul into it. The sape sculpture was crafted with intense emotion and care, which is why I feel it has a life of its own,” he explained.

He also reflected on the unique experience of installing the sculpture at its final site in Sungai Asap, Belaga.

While working on it in the studio, he said the sounds of the work were nothing compared to the aura it radiated during the installation.

“That’s when I truly felt its energy,” he said, emphasising the pride and connection he feels with his creations.

Kasat described how his team’s enthusiasm drives the process of crafting each sculpture.

“We are always incredibly passionate about what we create. My motto is simple: have passion, be patient, believe in yourself, and trust that Allah will guide you,” he added.

The sape sculpture not only celebrates the traditional instrument but also embodies the spirit of unity that the people of Sarawak holds dear.

The sculpture is a true masterpiece that brings together art, tradition, and innovation, with its significance reaching beyond just its size.

It speaks to the power of unity, the deep connection between Sarawak’s diverse cultures, and the beauty of nature.

For those visiting Belaga, this iconic sculpture is not just a sight to behold but a symbol of the enduring spirit that binds the people of Sarawak together.
