KUCHING: The Sarawak Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) has unveiled its new leadership line-up for the 2025–2027 term following its annual general meeting (AGM) held at a hotel on Saturday.
Dr Malvern Abdullah was elected as the new president, succeeding Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who had led the association since May 2009.
In a statement issued on Sunday, SBBA said Wee, 63, had also stepped down earlier this year from his role as vice-chairman of the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation (MBBF), marking the end of nearly two decades in top leadership positions within the sport.
Reflecting on his tenure, Wee said he was pleased with the smooth conduct of the AGM and expressed confidence in the newly elected committee’s ability to continue developing bodybuilding in Sarawak.
He said the association had experienced many highs and lows over the years, from celebrating successes and nurturing new talents to learning from setbacks and overcoming challenges but emphasised that the collective spirit to keep pushing forward must remain.
Wee encouraged the new leadership to surpass his achievements and assured them of his continued support and guidance whenever needed. He also expressed gratitude to past and present members of the bodybuilding community for their shared passion, commitment and camaraderie.
Despite stepping down, Wee said he would continue to support SBBA in his new role as honorary president.
Meanwhile, Malvern, 50, said the committee’s first meeting would focus on finalising the date for the Mr Sarawak 2026 competition.
He noted that several dates had been proposed, but the final decision must align with the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation’s calendar, particularly the scheduling of Mr Malaysia and the Asian Championships, both of which are set to be held in Selangor next year.
The newly elected SBBA leadership also includes three vice-presidents – Chia Soon Cheong, Adrian Wong and George Awi William.
Philomena Dexclyn Siar was appointed secretary, assisted by Donny Fam, while Ruzlan Lotfi will serve as treasurer with Roy Chan as assistant treasurer.
Committee members are Oddie Grinsam, Lim Kok Soon, Suhardi Rakawi, Sonny Chia, Abdul Khaaliq Ahmad and Martin Voon.
Founded in August 1963 – about a month before the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16 — SBBA was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies on Sept 2, 1963.
Its founding president was the late Dr YY Lee, who led the association from 1963 to 2003. He was later succeeded by Kapitan Desmond Thian, who served as president from 2004 to 2009.
