MIRI: Sarawak’s young boxers have sent a strong message ahead of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) after delivering an impressive performance at the 5th Sarawak International Open Boxing Championship 2026.

The six-day tournament, held at the Miri Indoor Stadium from June 23 to 28, saw the Sarawak SUKMA squad coached by Muhammad Helman Morni win seven gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

The gold medal winners were Patricia Jaquilina Bruce (54kg), Clavia Charlene Sudang Kenedy (57kg), Muhammad Irfan Mohamad Ishak (57kg), Abraham Samuel Jerry (67kg), Anderton Tie Teck Hieng (75kg), Khairil Hazami Sulam (57kg) and Marcos Robert (80kg).

Sarawak’s silver medals came through Davis Beckham Mit (60kg), Lam Wee Liang (63.5kg) and Riq Roland (67kg), while Lailatul Aini Sapian (54kg) contributed the team’s only bronze medal.

Team manager Datuk Johnny Ting Su King expressed his delight with the fighters’ performances, describing the achievement as a major boost ahead of SUKMA Selangor 2026, scheduled from Aug 15 to 24.

He said the success achieved by the young boxers was a positive indicator of their readiness to compete at the national multi-sport event.

“It is a great achievement by our young boxers. Congratulations and well done to them for winning the medals,” Johnny told Sarawak Tribune.

He added that the experience gained from the international-level competition would help the fighters continue improving and maintain their momentum heading into SUKMA.

Johnny stressed that the team’s focus would now return to preparations, with the boxers resuming their regular training programmes according to schedule.

“The boxers will now return to their main responsibility, which is to train as usual according to the programme that has been set,” he added.
