KUCHING: Sarawak and Brazil are exploring potential areas of collaboration in the aviation and transport sectors following a courtesy call by Brazilian Ambassador to Malaysia, Daniella Ortega Menezes, on Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, at his office in Petra Jaya today.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on opportunities to strengthen cooperation, particularly in aviation.
Menezes highlighted that aircraft models produced by Embraer, Brazil’s leading aircraft manufacturer, could be well-suited for Sarawak’s regional and domestic routes.
She also commended the Sarawak government’s initiative to establish its own state-owned airline, Air Borneo, describing it as a significant step towards improving air connectivity and advancing the state’s transport sector.
Meanwhile, Lee and Menezes noted that Sarawak and Brazil share similar geographical and climatic conditions, with certain areas facing challenges of limited road access.
This, they agreed, highlighted the critical role of air connectivity in linking communities and supporting regional growth.
The meeting also saw the exchange of insights on Brazil’s aviation industry and sustainability efforts, reflecting Sarawak’s openness to international knowledge-sharing and strategic partnerships.
Menezes’ visit marked her first official trip to Sarawak since assuming her post on Aug 1. Both sides expressed hope to maintain communication and explore further linkages between Sarawak and Brazil in the future.
Among those present were Honorary Consul of Brazil in Sarawak, Datuk Amar Jaul Samion; permanent secretary to the ministry, Datuk Wong Hee Sieng; and head of the aviation division, Zulkarnain Rosli.
