MIRI: Sarawak continues to serve as a prime example of a multiracial state that upholds the values of tolerance and unity.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Deputy Minister, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, highlighted that the state’s ethnic and cultural diversity is a unique strength that should be cherished and preserved.

He said that the harmonious relationship among the various communities in Sarawak sets the state apart from others in Malaysia.

“Sarawak is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity, forming a pluralistic society grounded in high tolerance.

“This is a valuable asset that we must protect for future generations,” he said during a Hari Raya visit to community leaders’ homes around Miri on Thursday.

The Piasau assemblyman also expressed hope that Sarawak’s unique unity could be promoted to international tourists, especially those from China, who often visit destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Sabah.

“We want foreign tourists to visit Sarawak and witness firsthand how our communities live in harmony, especially during festive occasions such as Hari Raya.

“They can also enjoy the open house culture and taste traditional dishes like ‘rendang’ and ‘lemang’,” he added.

During the Hari Raya visit, Ting and his delegation visited 12 homes of local community leaders, including the village chief of Pulau Melayu, KK Darahman Sahat, the women’s chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) branch of Kampung Pulau Melayu, Robiah Mohd Hamdan, as well as several veterans and other respected figures.

He further urged the people of Sarawak to continue preserving the spirit of unity that has long been the foundation of the state’s strength.

“We must value and protect this harmony, as it is a core part of Sarawak’s identity that makes us stand out on the world stage,” he said.
