SIBU: It may have been volleyball that brought them to Sarawak, but it was the state’s food and warm hospitality that left the biggest impression on Chinese Taipei players Weng Tzu Yun and Chen Yi, who are representing Hong Kong’s Victory Volleyball Club at the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitation (SIVI) 2026.
For Weng, the experience in this city has been shaped not only by the competition on court but also by her first taste of Sarawak’s local cuisine.
“The food here is very delicious,” she said through a translator.
Weng, who is experiencing Sibu for the first time, said she has previously been to Malaysia and would welcome the opportunity to return again.
When asked about the local dishes she had tried, she singled out bak kut teh as one of her favourites.
“I have been to Malaysia before,” she added.

She also expressed her willingness to recommend Sarawak to friends back home in Chinese Taipei, saying the experience had been a positive one.
Her teammate Chen Yi shared a similar impression, describing Sarawak as warm and welcoming despite the hot weather.
“I think it’s very good. Even though it is a little hot, everyone is very enthusiastic,” she told Sarawak Tribune today (July 6).
Like Weng, Chen said the food was one of the highlights of her stay.
“The food,” she replied when asked what she enjoyed most about the experience.
Chen added that she would gladly return to Sarawak in the future, reflecting the positive impression the visit had left on her.
The pair are among several international players competing in the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitation (SIVI) 2026, which continues to serve as both a competitive platform and a cultural exchange for athletes from across Asia.
