KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, has pledged financial incentives for Sarawak chess players who win medals at the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

Speaking at the Kongsi Raya Blitz Chess 2026 tournament at SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor on Saturday, Yap announced rewards of RM1,500 for gold, RM1,000 for silver and RM500 for bronze.

He said the incentives aim to motivate Sarawak players to perform well at SUKMA and bring pride to the state.

Yap also encouraged students to pursue excellence in both academics and sports, highlighting that chess fosters discipline, focus, patience and strategic thinking among young people.

As part of the Kongsi Raya celebration, he distributed angpao to participants and volunteers during the event.
