KUCHING: Sarawak is determined to become a model for sustainable development and climate action through its Net Zero Sarawak Plan and the Carbon Plan, says Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

He said the state’s initiative reflects a firm commitment to low-carbon growth, renewable energy innovation and community-driven climate action, aligning with Sarawak’s long term vision under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“This is not just a plan on paper, it is a living commitment that will grow with progress, innovation and partnerships.

“Our success in combating climate change depends on strong collaboration,” he said in his opening address during the Sarawak Net Zero and Carbon Plan Open Day, here today (Oct 7).

He said the event is more than just a platform to share progress, describing it as a call to action for all sectors to collaborate, learn and take collective steps toward a sustainable future.

“Governments alone cannot achieve Net Zero. We need active engagement from industry players, research institutions, communities, residents and individuals.

“Together, we can develop innovative technologies, adopt evolving business models and create green connectivity opportunities that will benefit citizens and partners,” he added.

Dr Hazland noted that Sarawak, blessed with abundant natural resources and land, is exploring a mix of nature-based solutions including forest conservation, mangrove restoration, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

He added that the state government is formulating comprehensive policies and regulatory frameworks to ensure that land management and energy transition efforts meet global standards while supporting local communities.

“We aim to inspire stronger community participation, particularly among the younger generation, to lead Sarawak’s journey toward sustainability and empowerment,” he said.

He reiterated that Sarawak’s climate journey is a shared mission that requires courage, commitment, and collaboration.

“If we stay the course, Sarawak will continue to lead in policies and innovations that protect our environment while driving economic growth.

“Together, we can make Sarawak a model of sustainable development, not only for Malaysia but for the world,” he said.
