BINTULU: Sarawak is committed to advancing its people through values rooted in Islamic principles while championing inclusive development.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who represented the Premier at the state-level Maal Hijrah event at Bintulu Civic Centre today, emphasised that the Hijrah is not merely a historical migration, but a profound transformation symbolising unity, resilience and progress.

“This year’s theme, ‘Ummah Maju Makmur’ (Progressive and Prosperous Ummah ), perfectly reflects Sarawak’s aspirations, not only in economic growth but also in cultivating values, knowledge and strong moral character,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak’s development approach, particularly under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), reflects the spirit of Hijrah through green economy initiatives, digital transformation, social inclusion, and sustainable practices.

He highlighted Sarawak’s success in strengthening its fiscal standing and attracting both domestic and foreign investments, made possible through transparent and forward-thinking policies.

“Our strong foundation today is built upon unity among Sarawakians of all races and faiths, driven by principles of equality and justice,” he added.

Awang Tengah also highlighted several people-centric initiatives such as Free Education, Special Aid for Mothers Giving Birth, and skills training programmes that empower Sarawakians holistically, reflecting the state government’s determination to produce a knowledgeable and resilient society.

In conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS), Awang Tengah paid tribute to the council’s role in the development of Islamic institutions across the state since its establishment in 1955.

“From religious education and syariah administration to mosque development and da’wah outreach, MIS has been instrumental in advancing Islam in Sarawak in a progressive and inclusive manner,” he said.

He expressed hope that MIS will continue to lead ummah transformation as a modern, strategic and visionary Islamic body, based on Maqasid Syariah , which are the principles of protecting religion, life, intellect, lineage and property.

Awang Tengah also urged Muslims in Sarawak to rise as innovators and thinkers, not mere followers.

“Be agents of change. Be the ones who inspire, think strategically and lead transformation,” he urged.

He called upon all Sarawakians to embrace the essence of Hijrah by renewing intentions, strengthening unity, and striving for a brighter future for both faith and the state.

“Let us enter the new Islamic year with renewed spirit, dedication, and love for our religion and our homeland,” he said.
