THE Sarawak government will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to refine the frameworks concerning the amendments to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO), which came into effect on May 1.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said a harmonious and progressive industrial relations framework is fundamental to facilitate and sustain economic growth.

“These amendments are designed to enhance protection for workers, promote industrial harmony, and align with global best practices.

“The revised SLO underscores the government’s commitment to fostering an equitable and dynamic labour market,” he said in his ministerial winding up speech during the DUN Sitting here today.

Through these initiatives, he said Sarawak is poised to advance its economic resilience while ensuring that its labour policies remain robust and adaptable to future challenges.

“This reinforces Sarawak’s position as a preferred destination for investment with its harmonious and productive workforce,” he added.

On immigration and labour management in the state, Sikie said the Sarawak government has implemented the Foreign Workers Transformation Approach (FWTA) System, effective Jan 15 this year.

He said this is to position Sarawak as a competitive hub for investors and the government is committed to providing non-tax benefits that enhance the business ecosystem.

“This system also represents a pivotal step in digitising the immigration and labour processes. It is also to streamline the recruitment and regulation of foreign workers, ensuring efficiency and transparency.

“This is in compliance with international labour standards, thus strengthening Sarawak’s appeal to foreign and domestic investors,” said Sikie.
