As Sarawak marks the Christmas season, representatives from community organisations across the state share their hopes for greater compassion, inclusion and support for the vulnerable, calling for the spirit of the season to endure well beyond the festivities.

More than merriment

CHRISTMAS brings cheer and merriment. Yet beyond the gifts and greetings, it also ushers in renewed hope among its celebrants – a moment to pause, reflect and look ahead with faith in better days. Beyond the twinkling lights and festive gatherings, the season holds deeper meaning for many, reminding communities of compassion, resilience and the importance of standing together, especially after a year marked by challenges and change.

Representing the diverse communities of Sarawak, Sarawak Tribune reached out to several societies and associations to hear their hopes for the season. From calls for greater inclusion and understanding to wishes for stronger community support, sustainable progress and improved opportunities for the vulnerable, these voices reflect a shared longing: that the spirit of Christmas will extend beyond December, guiding Sarawak towards a more caring, united and hopeful new year.

Stephanie Goh, Vice-President, Kuching Autistic Association

This Christmas, the Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) holds on to a simple yet powerful hope – to build a kinder community where children with special needs and their families feel supported, included and never left to walk alone. KAA also hopes for greater awareness and genuine acceptance of children and adults with autism. Every child deserves to be seen beyond their diagnosis, recognised for their abilities, and given the opportunity to thrive in a community that embraces differences.

Christmas reminds us that love is not only spoken – it is shown. When we give, we extend hope to children and families who need reassurance that they are seen, valued and never alone.

Kimberley Tan, Vice-President, Sarawak Women for Women Society

As communities come together to celebrate Christmas, we wish everyone a season filled with peace, warmth and meaningful moments with loved ones. May we remember to care for ourselves and one another, and step into the New Year with compassion, hope and renewed purpose.

Ernest Ting, General Manager, Sarawak Society for the Deaf

This Christmas, our NGO hopes for greater understanding, inclusion and kindness in society. We wish for continued support and care for persons with disabilities, especially the Deaf community, through improved communication access, equality and opportunities. Christmas reminds us to share love, help one another and build a society where everyone feels valued and respected.

Irene J Yong, Founder and AdvisEr, Sarawak Gerontology and Geriatrics Society

As SGGS, an NGO that advocates healthy and active living among members of society, we hope for continued good health for all our members and continuity in all our endeavours. May our society grow stronger in the coming year.

Dr Yuwana Podin, Ordinary Exco President, Sarawak AIDS Concern Society

This Christmas, as we celebrate love and hope, we wish for greater compassion and an end to stigma. May the season remind us that everyone deserves care, dignity and acceptance.

We also hope for increased recognition and greater funding support for our work in ending AIDS.
