CARDIFF: SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, is making history by introducing the KETEQ AI smart chip, built with artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the efficiency of power grids and electric motors.

Its chief executive officer, Shariman Jamil, said the Edge AI Power Converter technology is capable of reducing energy consumption and addressing power supply disruptions.

“Half of the world’s energy is used by motors. If we can reduce that usage, it would be a major achievement,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report during the chip’s pre-launch event at CSA Catapult at Cardiff, United Kingdom yesterday.

He pointed out that the chip allowed AI to be integrated directly into hardware, unlike existing systems.

Shariman also touched on the recent large-scale power outages in Europe and the need for stronger, more resilient grid systems.

The chip is expected to be commercialised within 1 to 2 years, with target markets including the UK, Europe, the US, and Southeast Asia.
