KUCHING: Sarawak is intensifying preparations to co-host the 2027 SEA Games, with major upgrades in sports infrastructure and 16 events already confirmed for the state.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the state government had approved the construction of a velodrome, even though cycling events for the Games will take place in Peninsular Malaysia.

“The velodrome is part of our commitment to strengthen cycling sports. Sarawak’s cycling athletes, especially in development and junior categories, are currently among the best in Malaysia,” he said to reporters after officiating the Borneo Games yesterday (Sept 24).

He noted that the SEA Games represent more than just competition, providing Sarawak with an opportunity to showcase its capacity to stage international sporting events while also leaving behind a long-term legacy through upgraded facilities.

Among the events confirmed to be staged in Sarawak are archery, aquatics, shooting, tenpin bowling, taekwondo, tennis, squash, cricket, muay thai and weightlifting, while boxing will be hosted in Penang and polo if approved as a new sport will be held in Johor.

“If I am not mistaken, about 16 sports have been confirmed. There may be two or three more depending on applications from participating countries. Sarawak may be given another sport to host,” he said.

Abdul Karim added that hosting duties would not only boost Sarawak’s image as a sporting hub but also inspire greater participation in sports among local youth.

“This is our chance to show that Sarawak is not only capable of organising world-class sporting events but also serious about nurturing future champions,” he said.
