KUCHING: All 1,031 police officers and personnel deployed for the 17th Sabah state election have been told to maintain strict discipline, control their emotions and avoid reactive behaviour throughout their assignment.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said Sabah’s political climate has previously been tense and filled with potential provocations, making professionalism and adherence to the law crucial for the Sarawak contingent.

“We are aware that the previous Sabah state election atmosphere was heated and challenging, with various political agendas that could spark provocation.

“Therefore, control your emotions, avoid reactive behaviour and always act based on the law and operational orders.

“Every inch of action by the police is observed by the public, so professionalism must be maintained at all times,” he said during the Sarawak Contingent Human Resource Assistance to Sabah State Election flag-off ceremony.

This morning, a total of 903 officers and personnel from various formations, district police headquarters (IPD), and departments were sent to Sabah via commercial flights.

The remaining number had already been deployed to the Land Below the Wind few days ago.

In his speech, Zainal reminded the personnel to carry the “name, identity and dignity” of the Sarawak Contingent while serving in Sabah.

“Whatever behaviour, speech and actions you display in the field will reflect the professionalism and work culture we uphold here. Therefore, safeguard your manners, discipline and conduct throughout your duty,” he said.

He also urged officers to remain focused on their responsibilities and to uphold integrity, saying their presence is crucial in supporting the smooth running of the democratic process.

On firearms, Zainal told the personnel to “take care of your firearm as you would your own life”.

“Make sure inspections are carried out regularly, close monitoring is conducted, and every safety procedure is fully adhered to.

“Negligence in this aspect can pose a great risk not only to security personnel but also to the public,” he said.

The Sarawak Contingent police will remain in Sabah until the election process and vote-counting are completed.
