KUCHING: Sarawak’s upcoming state election could potentially be influenced by developments unfolding in Malaya.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said recent political developments, including the dissolution of state assemblies in Malaya, could affect election timing considerations nationwide.

“What Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim said is also true. It can happen, looking at the current scenario,” he said when commenting on speculation that the Sarawak election could be held within 100 days during a press conference today.

Abdul Karim said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is closely monitoring political developments elsewhere in the country, particularly in states that may be heading for elections.

“The Premier is also observing what is happening in Peninsular Malaysia. Johor has dissolved its assembly, and there may be other states following.

“We would not be surprised if many states dissolve their assemblies. If that happens, it may be better to hold everything together, including the general election,” he said.

Abdul Karim who is also Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts pointed out that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously indicated the possibility of an earlier general election.

He estimated that organising separate state and federal elections could significantly increase expenditure.

“If several states are already moving towards dissolution, it may be better to hold the elections together to save costs. If a state election costs around half a billion ringgit and the general election later costs another half a billion ringgit, that is a large amount.

“If the elections are held together, the cost can be reduced because voters can cast their votes at the same time,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty, Abdul Karim stressed that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) remains prepared should an election be called sooner than expected.

“For Sarawak, even if the election is held this month, we are well prepared and I am not being arrogant.

“We are not saying the opposition will be wiped out, but we know we are on the upper hand. We are confident that we will be able to form the government again,” he said.

However, Abdul Karim acknowledged that the political environment in Malaya differs significantly from Sarawak.

“Many people were surprised when Johor dissolved early. That was a strategic move, especially by UMNO, and it affected the political scenario in neighbouring states,” he said.
