THE Sarawak Craft Council Bill 2023 is set to establish a comprehensive and equitable framework that will benefit all stakeholders in the industry, ensuring fair treatment for everyone involved.

Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabang Ijang expressed his confidence that the bill would address existing inconsistencies and propel Sarawak’s handicraft sector to new heights.

“In passing this bill, we can overcome numerous challenges and elevate Sarawak’s handicraft industry to the forefront,” Wilson stated during the debate on the bill at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Tuesday (May 16).

He emphasised that the bill would create abundant opportunities for communities in his constituency, particularly in Kapit.

“There are many gifted craftsmen in Kapit, renowned for its exceptional Pua Kumbu craft. I hope this Bill will be the much-needed catalyst and lifeline for these craftsmen.”

Simultaneously, Wilson highlighted the urgent need to improve internet and phone connectivity to facilitate and stimulate tourism activities throughout Sarawak, including the Pelagus region.

He recognised the significance of reliable digital infrastructure in promoting tourism and fostering economic growth.
