Sarawak Customs seizes RM5.12 mln uncustomed goods

SIBU: Customs seized cigarettes, liquors, drugs, and uncustomed goods worth RM5.12 million so far this year.

Sarawak Customs Department director Norizan Yahya said this figure was recorded from January until May 10.

“This success was achieved through 55 cases with a total seizure value of RM2,701,336.54 involving unpaid taxes of RM2,424,989.19,” he told a press conference at the Sibu Customs office today.

Norizan said that out of the 55 cases, 39 involved cigarettes and liquor, six involved drugs, nine involved uncustomed goods, and one involved a foreign vehicle.

“For the record, from January to May 10, the Sibu Customs Division has recorded 39 cases involving illicit cigarettes and liquors worth RM3,226,451.65, including taxes.

“For drugs, Customs Sibu thwarted six attempts to smuggle in drugs, including methamphetamine, ketamine, and marijuana, via air transport, with an estimated gross weight of 46.88 kg worth RM1,488,030,” he added.

Meanwhile, for the nine cases involving dutiable goods that were not properly declared, the value of the goods and taxes amounted to RM367,306.58, and one case involved a foreign vehicle from Brunei Darussalam with an estimated value and taxes amounting to RM44,537.50.

Norizan urged the public to cooperate by providing information related to any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs Office in all districts of Sarawak.
