KUCHING: Sarawak’s digital transformation continues to accelerate with the launch of its first AI-powered unmanned “Tap & Go Mart” which marks Malaysia’s first franchise of its kind.

Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Bhd (SDEC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani said the concept would be expanded gradually before being franchised statewide.

“InsyaAllah, we plan to franchise it in the future. For now, we will expand it step by step, just like how we introduced Sarawak Pay (SPay).

“Initially, we placed it in selected locations so that people could get used to it. Once they are familiar, we may franchise it.

“Hence, we decided to launched it for the first time at Baitul Makmur II Building because it has over 2,000 employees, making it an ideal starting point to encourage usage.”

Mohamad Morshidi said this in a press conference after the AI Unmanned Mart launching ceremony at  Baitul Makmur II Building today.

He added that driven by cutting-edge AI and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and operated by Akayan Solutions Sdn Bhd, the mart offers a fully autonomous 24-hour shopping experience, redefining modern convenience.

He said that this initiative reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to expand digitalisation across various sectors.

“This is part of our broader digital economy agenda. Many other digital initiatives have already been implemented by SDEC and more are underway in collaboration with strategic partners.”

He highlighted that the project complements existing digital services in the state, including Sarawak Pay and smart parking systems, as part of the government’s push towards digital economies.

“All these initiatives are part of the digital economy journey. Tap & Go Mart is just one of many efforts to promote innovation and efficiency across Sarawak.

“This includes the online parking payment system. Now, if you want to park by the roadside, there is no need to buy or tear a coupon anymore.

“Everything can be done directly through your phone. Just pay online, it is easier and faster.”
