Sarawak delegation visits China to explore best practices in utility management

CHINA: A Sarawak delegation led by Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUTS) Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi recently visited the Guangzhou Fushan Circular Economy Industrial Park and the Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station.

The visit is aimed at strengthening collaboration and exploring innovative solutions in the utility and energy sector.

According to MUTS in a statement, the official visit focused on gaining insights into best practices in utility management, smart grid systems, clean energy technologies, and advanced pumped hydro storage facilities in both cities.

“The delegation visited the Guangzhou Fushan Circular Economy Industrial Park with the world’s largest incinerator power generation plant where they were briefed on integrated waste to energy systems and the application of new sources of energy, smart grid integration and clean energy conversion processes for sustainable urban utilities and greener electricity generation,” it said.

Meanwhile in Shenzhen, the delegation visited the Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station, one of China’s largest and most advanced pumped hydro facilities.

Julaihi said that such energy storage infrastructure is highly relevant to Sarawak’s evolving power landscape, particularly with increasing integration of renewable sources.

As part of strengthening bilateral ties, the delegation also participated in a meeting with Shenzhen government leaders and department heads led by director general of the Shenzhen Foreign Affairs Office Cao Saixian, where both parties exchanged views on water supply, electricity supply, and telecommunication and as well as ICT and exploring potential areas of collaboration.

“Shenzen’s advancements in utility infrastructure, and digital connectivity are of great interest, especially in how technologies are applied at scale to serve urban and growing regions.

“The visit reaffirms Sarawak’s commitment to enhancing energy resilience and expanding international cooperation, particularly in green energy technologies,” the ministry said.

Among those present were Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang and Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki.
