TOKYO, Japan: Sarawak is intensifying its efforts to generate renewable energy, not only for domestic use but also to meet the growing demand for green energy across the ASEAN region.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state has been identified as part of the ASEAN Green Initiative (AGI), which aims to supply clean energy to neighbouring countries within the region.

He explained that Sarawak currently produces 70 per cent hydroelectric power and 30 per cent low-carbon gas energy.
“With this energy mix, we hope to share our ‘electrons’ with our neighbours. With Japan’s support and technology, we believe we can contribute to global decarbonisation efforts,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in his speech at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Collaboration between the Japanese Malaysia Association (JMA) and the Sarawak Forest Department, held at a hotel here today.
He added that Sarawak is implementing a strategic agenda to build a green, low-carbon, and sustainable economy.
Among the ongoing initiatives, he said, are the enforcement of the Forest Carbon Activity Rules 2022, the restoration of 200,000 hectares of forest landscapes by 2030, the planting of over 50 million trees across the state, and the strengthening of protected areas and biodiversity conservation.
“We believe Sarawak’s forests are not merely economic assets but a sacred trust for future generations. Japan remains a highly valued strategic partner in this effort, particularly through the continued support of JMA,” he added.
