KUCHING: Malaysia’s Bunga Raya 7s women’s rugby squad has named 17 players, including Sarawak standouts, Josie Mavcellina Gone and Valerie Juan, as preparations intensify for the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series and the SEA Games in Thailand.

The team will depart on September 18 for the first series of the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series in Hangzhou, China, before heading to Colombo, Sri Lanka, for the second series from October 18-19.
The tournaments are part of Malaysia’s efforts to maintain its Asian ranking while serving as key preparations for the upcoming SEA Games in December.
For Josie, representing Malaysia is both an honour and a responsibility.
“Wearing the national jersey feels powerful, knowing I carry the pride of the nation with me.
“On the field, it’s not just about the game; it’s about giving everything for the team and the country.
“My hope is to be among the starting seven, push Malaysian rugby to a higher level, and inspire more young players to take up the sport,”she said.
Josie made these remarks to Sarawak Tribune when contacted recently, apart from paying tribute to her roots in Sarawak rugby.
“My coaches and teammates shaped me into who I am today. Sarawak rugby isn’t just a sport; it’s a family, a culture, a source of strength and purpose. Without it, I wouldn’t be the player or person I am today,” she added.
Teammate Valerie also echoed similar sentiments of pride and commitment.
“Representing Malaysia in rugby means carrying national pride, honour and responsibility while showcasing strength, unity and resilience through the game.
“It’s also about inspiring the younger generation and proving that with determination and teamwork, Malaysia can compete consistently among the best,” she said.
She highlighted that Sarawak rugby remains a strong foundation for her development.
“It unites players of different backgrounds, teaches strength and resilience, and pushes us to honour our heritage and state with courage and passion,” Valerie said.
The inclusion of Josie and Valerie continues Sarawak’s strong tradition of producing players for the national Sevens setup, with both athletes expected to play pivotal roles in Malaysia’s campaign over the next months ahead.
