KUCHING: The Sarawak government is set to receive the Certificate of Excellence Recognition for the Integrity and Governance Management System (SPINE) following its outstanding achievement in organisational transparency and governance.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, said Sarawak will be among the states receiving the prestigious recognition.

“Tomorrow morning (Tuesday), I will represent the Sarawak Government in receiving the award from the Chief Secretary to the Government and chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Integrity (IIM), Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

“Sarawak has received numerous recognitions in the past, and once again, our state is among those leading in earning this recognition,” he said.

He said this while speaking at the Pre-Engagement Session with Agencies on the Development of the Sarawak Anti-Corruption Strategy (SACS) at the Waterfront Hotel today (July13).

Meanwhile, the award, officially issued by the IIM and signed by Shamsul Azri, is presented to agencies or ministries that achieve an excellent integrity health score of more than 90 per cent under the SPINE assessment.

In a related development, Juanda said rapid development must be supported by a strong governance system to prevent abuse of power.

According to him, economic progress that is not underpinned by strong governance values could increase the risks of leakages, abuse of power and corruption, ultimately undermining the confidence of the public, investors and strategic partners.

“Therefore, the development of the Sarawak Anti-Corruption Strategy (SACS) comes at the right time to strengthen the culture of integrity, good governance, transparency and accountability across all sectors and levels of society in Sarawak.

“At the same time, it will ensure that development continues to be implemented in a transparent, ethical and sustainable manner,” he said.
